BBJJ Training What is BJJ?

jjmontageBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It is a derivative of early 20th century Kodokan Judo then developed and defined by the Gracie family. It promotes the principle that smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique, applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat them. BJJ can be trained for self defence, sport grappling tournaments, and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, sparring and live drilling play a major role in training.

Benefits of BJJ

Training in BJJ will improve your fitness, stamina, strength, flexibility and mental clarity. The BJJ student develops an understanding of body mechanics, leverage and an awareness of the sensitivity of physical contact. Soon after starting training the BJJ student begins to appreciate the technical depth of the art and why BJJ is often described as ‘chess on the mat’. Developing skills in BJJ is not easy and requires commitment and dedication but with hard work students are rewarded with a deep understanding of this extremely effective Art .

Who Trains BJJ?

BJJ practitioners are involved in the art for a wide range of reasons. Some students want to improve their fitness and health while others want a physical and technical challenge. Many people want a practical, effective self defence system and there are some that want to compete and push their limits. Generally students who commit to BJJ enjoy the mental side of the art as much as the physical and are always striving to improve their technique and application.

What is involved in a BJJ class?

A BJJ class consists of a warm up and strength/conditioning element. This is followed by the teaching of specific techniques and positions. Students will then drill techniques and grapple in controlled sparring matches of varying time limits. Finally there is a cool down and stretching period that finishes the class.
